Placeholder text exists so that people reviewing a design look at the design. Real copy invites feedback on the copy; visibly fake Latin does not.
Where Lorem Ipsum comes from
It is not gibberish. The text is scrambled Latin taken from de Finibus Bonorum et Malorum, a treatise on ethics written by Cicero in 45 BC. The familiar opening, "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet", is a fragment of "dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet" — roughly, "pain itself, because it is pain".
Typesetters have used it as filler since the 1500s. It survived into digital design because its letter distribution and word lengths approximate English closely enough to look like real text, while being obviously unreadable to anyone reviewing the page.
When not to use it
Placeholder text hides problems. A layout that looks balanced with even Latin paragraphs often falls apart when the real content arrives with a nine-word heading, a two-sentence intro and a list of forty items.
Test with realistic content instead when you are checking whether a design survives contact with reality: the longest product name you actually sell, a genuine customer address, an empty state with nothing in it.
Never ship it
Lorem Ipsum reaching production is common enough to be a running joke, and it is embarrassing when it happens on a live page or in a printed run.
Two cheap safeguards: search for "lorem" as a pre-launch check, and add it to the deny list of any content linter you run in CI. If placeholder text does get indexed by a search engine, remove it and request re-indexing — a page of Latin is exactly the kind of thin, meaningless content that damages how the rest of the site is assessed.
